Dogs
I am actually going to be covering two subjects that go under this title. I titled this article “Dogs,” because there are so many dogs among Christians these days. I’m not talking about the barking, licking, tail wagging dogs. I’m talking about people who are dogs. This may sound harsh but it’s the truth and unfortunately sometimes the truth hurts.
What I am going to do in this article is compare us Christians to dogs. We all know the saying, “A dog is a man’s best friend.” Now I happen to really like dogs, but they have a darker side to them.
Dogs are dirty! They’re dirty animals. I don’t know how many of you have ever washed or tried cleaning a dog. If you have, you know that right after you wash him and get him cleaned up he will go find a patch of dirt or smelly pile of something and roll around in it! They love to be dirty!
There are a lot of dirty things a dog does. One that we all know of, and which the Bible talks about, is a dog returning to its vomit. A dog will eat something that he shouldn't and them vomit it up. He will then come back and eat again the very thing he just vomited. My family had a dog once and I saw it in action. He vomited and then tried to go back and eat it! A dogs body rejects anything he eats that might be harmful to it, only to have the dog eat the same thing all over again.
Now we get to the point of the matter and how this applies to Christians. How are Christians like dogs? Simply, a lot of Christians are dirty. I am going to show you how many Christians try to “eat” their own “vomit” or “roll in the dirt”.
When a Christian first gets saved and repents they are washed clean and their sins are washed away. But like dogs after we are washed we go and roll around the dirt our Savior just washed off of us! For example, we ask God to forgive us for our sins and wash us clean from listening to the wrong music, then soon after go and listen to the exact same music again. In that way, we are literally no better than a dog!
How do Christians return to their own “vomit?” In 2 Peter 2:22 it says, But it happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again;……
When we first get saved and as we grow in Christ, most of us “vomit” up what was harming us and will harm us. Our new man knows that this “food” isn’t good so it rejects it. But then like that dirty disgusting dog we go back and eat our vomit again! We start feeding on the same filth that God purged from us. This time it will probably do more harm than before, make us spiritually sick and ruin our Christian lives. We are just as dirty as that dog. We are fools for doing this! In Proverbs 26:1l it says, As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. That verse pretty much sums up everything I’m trying to get across to you here. We are like dogs!
God died for us, offered a free gift of eternal life, washed us clean of all our sin and the most we can do for him is go right back to our sin. Now, I am not saying we have to be perfect and that you will never do anything wrong again but we must fight the fight and try not go back to what we came from. The Christian life is a struggle and a war. Romans 3:10-12, As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Romans 3:22-23, Even the righteous of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe : for there is no difference:
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
I want to talk about how you have to beware of dogs. There are professing Christians out there who outwardly look like Christians. However, they indulge in various sinful activities while professing, “Jesus still loves us and we are going to heaven.” I warn you right now, they will bring you down before you even realize what’s happening. Influence is a powerful thing. Before you know it an angry word might slip, rebellion will set in, a lot of whys will make their way into your usual “yes sir” and it will escalate from there. I am telling you this because it has happened to me and I am still trying to fight it.
Some Christian parents would never allow their children to be friends with a lost person, but naively think that if you just add the title Christian in front of that person then everything’s okay. Inwardly that boy or girl may be just as bad if not worse than any lost person. Wolves in sheep’s clothing! Two verses, Philippians 3:2, Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.
Matthew 7:15, Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
You have to be careful about who you talk to and be with. For all you know they are eating their “vomit” every single day! Do you want to be around that?
I am going to wrap this up because there is a lot to cover on this subject. I pray that this article helps you in your Christian walk with God. We must be humble and accept the fact that we are all indeed like dogs at times. Only the prideful will think about how he’s better then a dog. I know that I am striving and trying to be better than a dog and not return my own “vomit”.
