Numbers 22:18-19 King James Version (KJV)
18 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.
19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.
Numbers 22:18-19 New King James Version (NKJV)
18 Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, please, you also stay here tonight, that I may know what more the LORD will say to me.”

18 Balaam showed a temporary wisdom. Silver and gold always has had much value, Balak’s house would have been big to show his great wealth, it is likely that he didn’t have enough gold and silver to fill his whole house so this would be an amount he might not be able to meet and it wouldn’t be enough. Working for own salvation is in this same way, we can’t do enough, we need Jesus and His grace, by Him alone are we saved. We need to follow The Lord even when it may cost us.
19 The Lord’s will wasn’t going to change; this shows his want for the money. Sometimes when we are in this state we lead ourselves to belief something about God’s will that isn’t true. Balaam should have sent them away and he should have returned home.
